Who Do You Think You Are?Who you thought you were a year ago is not who you think you are today. As I grocery shopped earlier, Fleetwood Mac was playing. "I'm so weak and you're so strong, You're so right and I'm so wrong." While I like listening to the album Rumours, there is something off-kilter about those words. Someone is indulging in polarized thinking. Right-wrong, black-white, up-down and so on. One of my teachers used to say "David, too much thinking will rot your brain." I took exception to his words. First I thought he was wrong, later I thought he was right, now I feel he was wise. I got to the middle ground once I stopped thinking and started feeling. The words "Who do you think you are?" usually precede the application of verbal force by those who need to intimidate or control others. In this article though, I am asking because who you think you are is probably quite different from who you feel you are. Thoughts have never described reality, and never will, because they never can. Never is a long time, they tell me. Feelings are your hotline to your personal reality. When I think about it, I am not sure who I am. When I feel it, I am quite certain of who I am. Our thoughts change from day to day, while feelings change slowly, over time and as a result of experience. Writing these articles is an example of thought versus feeling. Mentally, I often don't want to take the time or trouble, while at the same time I get a feeling of accomplishment by writing them. I usually feel guided as to the subject matter. I don't "think" much about how the end result will turn out. I just feel it will. Feelings can seem scary if you have ignored or shut them away for a period of time. Remember though, it is only you rattling your own cage. Write about them in your journal, and what comes out is what comes out. They are only words describing what you feel, and what you feel is what you feel. There are no good or bad feelings - and you don't need to explain or justify your feelings to anyone. You need only accept your feelings and yourself as best you can at that moment. Forget about who you think you are and begin feeling who you are. Love yourself as the irreplaceable being you truly are. Next article...
