A Way To The HeartIn the rough and tumble of life many of us learn to close our hearts to other people in order to stop the hurting. Trouble is, this closing of the heart to people means we close it to ourselves as well. This constant looping of action and reaction leads to a state of shutting down and distancing until nothing is left except the deafening silence of non-communication. This is very harmful because we forget to listen to the guidance and wisdom of our hearts. We become isolated, lonely and lost, feeling cut off from the flow and vitality of life. Even more tragic is that we forget we are the ones who chose to close down and distance. We end up believing that following a path of fear, timidity and loneliness is the way life is. There is an English saying that "All roads lead to the sea." Since England is an island, there is a lot of truth in it. Still, we are human beings, not islands, neither are we separated from each other by time and space. Every path leads somewhere. Ask yourself the question: is the path you are following taking you where you want to go? Some paths lead to healing, others to a repetition of painful experiences. Many paths of healing exist, some are easy to follow, others arduous. Many of us move from one path to another looking for the magic ingredient to cure us of dilemmas and problems. There are so few paths with heart. One true path exists for everyone. This path has heart. It has feeling, meaning, color and substance to it. At times it is difficult to traverse, especially in heat, drought or stormy weather. There are places where it twists and turns, with the danger of avalanches or a slippery surface. Other sections are idyllic. These are the spots where the ground rises up to meet your feet and the sun is always at your back. This path with heart is called living-your-own-life. It is the one path you are always on, can never step off and which you are so familiar with you probably don't recognize it for the wise and loving teacher it is. Many of us look outside for our path. We spend time and energy searching for an elusive will-o'-the-wisp there is no possibility of finding. While searching externally for our path, we turn our negative experiences into signposts, each one pointing to the horizon of more pain. No external path has the heart you need for true healing. They all lead in a circular path back to the source of pain. Remember, the true path to your heart exists inside you. This is the one place where few of us look until we have grown weary of pain. This path is sign posted by the promptings of your heart, and over the years has accumulated many names. Follow the beat of your own drum. Next article...
