Life And Other RealmsIt is fascinating to look at a night sky and see the beauty and grandeur of the millions of stars which twinkle and shine there. Sometimes it seems as if they were put there for us, to provoke us into pondering the meaning of life, the universe and our existence. Those little points of light, do they know something we do not? Of course, this is pre-supposing there is meaning and purpose to the universe at all. It may well be that the universe is here to simply revel in its own existence, and nothing more is needed in the way of justification for its existence. As a little boy I watched a swallow soaring and diving across the sky in obvious joy about being alive. As I sat in the field and watched, I could feel its gladness to be what it was. There surely is an invisible connectedness between all creatures. Since the universe and we are obviously here, it only stands to reason we are all here for the same purpose. So if this wonderful fountainhead of awe and wonder has no purpose for existing other than to revel in its own existence, could the basis for human existence be as straight forward and simple? If this were true, what more profound basis could there be for the existence of mankind? Imagine, we need have no reasons to justify our existence past the fact that being born is reason enough. How freeing, uplifting and mind boggling all in one. Frightening also. For then we must give up our thousand and one theories and systems by which we attempt to explain "why" we are here. It is easy to forget we humans are not the only life form in the universe. Not all life forms are in material bodies, many exist in energy form. It is arrogant and simple minded to imagine that human beings are the only creatures with self-conscious awareness. Even children ask "Where did I come from?" Do they remember something we have forgotten? Perhaps the universe is here simply for the joy and scintillation of experiencing life. Perhaps we don't have to satisfy a hundred conditions, rules and regulations before we can be happy, fulfilled, loved, serene. It is interesting to notice that a newborn baby and a spiritual master express the same innocence, wonder and profound perception. It isn't possible to hide anything from a newborn; or a spiritual master either. Two ends of the spectrum, the same result. [written in 1976] Next article...
