The Wisdom of the EnneagramThe enneagram was introduced into the western world by George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. The "Diagram of all life" is supposed to have been in use in the Middle East for 3000 years and more. Gurdjieff understood the enneagram as symbolizing the dynamic movement of the universe. The ancient teaching of "As above, then so below" means that each one of us is a universe unto ourselves. What applies to the macrocosm (the universe) applies to the microcosm (our lives). We each carry all 9 of the enneagram energies inside us, and we move around the circle daily. The wonder of the enneagram is that once you understand each point for what it is, the frozen energy of personal stuckness starts to transform into the fluid movement of personal empowerment. This potent tool for wisdom is making its way back into the western world, as we painfully learn that we all live on the same planet. It is stressful to learn that what we do "here" affects our neighbors "there," and vice versa. We act surprised that we all share a common atmosphere, seas and land mass. The phrase "sharing space" is very new to the economically powerful nations of planet earth. We do share space, and the enneagram shows powerfully how we instinctually do it. Look at the diagram below and click on which one of the numbers or short descriptions grabs you, so to speak. This is very much a "That's me!" situation, and spontaneity is half the fun!
