A symbol is a device which is meant to represent a universal truth or message with a bigger, deeper and richer meaning than can be expressed in words or even actions. While the symbol itself doesn't change, the meaning it has for the student constantly expands, and becomes deeper, richer and more complex in meaning over time as he or she continues to grow into the wider understanding of what it represents.
