From the metaphysical point of view, the situations that both we and the other people are faced with are there for our growth. This means both as spiritual beings and as human beings. Of course, theory is one thing, and seeing our choices through in the face of opposition and conflict is something else entirely. Sometimes, it takes a lot of courage and any number of false starts before we achieve our goals. Sometimes, the opposition we meet is the result of genuine fear and misunderstanding on the part of those important to us. The other times means it is easier for the other person or people to work at keeping us "in our place", instead of them having to adapt, or let go of control. When the issues are a genuine concern, things can almost always be worked out. In the end, I feel that your question comes down to one of belief.
