Description: A horned devil with wings like those of a bat sits on a half-cube which symbolizes the half knowledge of only the visible, sensory side of existence. His right hand is raised up. An inverted flaming torch symbolic of hate, warfare and destruction is in his left. On his forehead, the inverted pentagram between his horns shows that man's place in the universe is reversed here.
From a ring in the half-cube, chains go out to the necks of a man and woman. The chains are loose enough to be slipped off, suggesting and meaning that much of perceived bondage is imaginary. The Devil here symbolizes the opposite of the Angel in Key #6. The man and woman are negative versions of the same man and woman shown in the same Key #6 (The Lovers). Divinatory Meaning: The domination of matter over spirit. Sensation as divorced from understanding. Illness, bondage to the material, violence, revolution, extraordinary effort, use of way too much force. Reversed: The beginning of spiritual understanding. A physical healing has started. The tendency to be ineffectual, indecision. |
